Last Thursday, February 24, 2011 marked the 3-year anniversary for Art Nouveau Magazine, a company founded by Morehouse Graduate Kendrick Daye. To celebrate this special occasion they decided to bring Theophilus London to perform at the Defloor Centre. “Who is Theophilus London?” is a question some of you may be asking yourselves.

Theophilus London electronic hip hop artist, born and raised in Brooklyn NY. London released his debut mixtape “JAM!, in 2008. In 2009 he collaborated with producer “Machine Drum for his second mixtape ” This Charming Mixtape, which brought London to a wider audience from the states to overseas.

Arriving at the venue early, I had the chance to meet with London and ask him some personal questions. One of the questions asked was what artist does he listened to on a constant basis. Shockingly, he responded, Lil B and Wacka Flocka. One would expect to hear artist like Marvin Gaye, Jay Z, or Little Dragon. During his performance London begin to “cook” and scream out “swag” in Lil B style.

The event was not heavily promoted but speaking with London, he said it was sold out. To begin the night there were several opening acts including: Naira, Rahbi, Ethereal, Britney Bosco, Corrine Stevie, Tendaberry, and A Ware. Some people checked out the performances while others walked around the venue looking at the wide range of artwork that covered the walls. There was also an open bar for those over 21.

During Intermissions, Spencer Greene (Savvy Society) was spinning some of the newest tracks from artist like Wiz Khalifa, Papa Jae, Pilot Music and OFWGKTA. As the clock neared towards 12am the man of the night made his way to the stage. It seemed as if a legend was in the building the way the crowd was screaming.

London performed the most popular tracks off of all three of his mixtapes, including his hit single flying overseas. His performance was interactive, as he brought several different females on stage with him. London also handed out some personal merchandise to his fans including tee shirts and buttons straight off of his jacket.

One of the biggest highlights was when London screamed out ” Kreemo, those my Ni**as for life” several different times showing his support and love for the upcoming brand based out of Atlanta.

As the show came to a conclusion, London requested that all of his fans follow him off stage as he searched for a table. Showing his love and appreciation for his fans, he signed autographs and took pictures. “Morehouse should get him to perform during homecoming next year “. All in all, Art Nouveau did an excellent job putting this event together and I think everyone is excited to see what acts they will be showcasing next.
